2014 End of year report

Happy new year to you all, please accept my apologies for this being a little late but 2014 has been a very hectic year!

Anyway, to the fishing. It's been a very good year in terms of catches, we started with a really good run of skate in the spring from the boats, with most competitors landing decent fish.

Especially well done to junior brothers, Lewis and Bradley Perry-French who did exceptionally well with the rays. Notably the boys won the Lawler pairs competition as a result of good thornback catches.

Smoothhound numbers were perhaps a little disappointing this year but some reasonable bass were caught and one of the highlights was Mick Morris landing a gold specimen tub-gurnard at an astonishing 2lbs.

With the usual onslaught of whiting later in the year, it was inevitable Tony Morris would make up for his early lull but it wasn't quite enough to catch his brother, Mick, who narrowly won the title by just two points.

Tony did however take the presidents heron for greatest number of fish in a year with 351 while Mick Morris and Ben Morris in second and third were separated by just 1 fish between them.

Beach fishing started a little slower with most of the better fishing coming later in the year. Nonetheless, G.S.A.C member Simon Stephenson eeked out results early on to gain a good lead in the championship and by the time the fish arrived in numbers he was too far ahead to be caught and won fairly comfortably.

Whiting numbers seemed better than usual from the shore this year with dogfish also an improvement. The most welcome addition to our usual autumn catches however was the encouraging numbers of codling caught. Several anglers landed them in the last few events with Mick Morris bagging 6 in one comp while our president, Kevin Morris, brought 5 to the scales too.

Mick's success over the year as a whole has led him to win yet another club championship with Ben Morris not too far behind in second. A special mention though goes out to relative newcomer Kelvin Wilton who got himself into 4th place overall and to 10yr old Lewis Perry-French who was 5th in the boat championship and 6th overall.

As I did I last year I have listed below fairly comprehensive championship results so you can see who has improved on 2013's standings. We've definitely had more interest in our club and in the angling this last year so long may it continue into 2015!

....and bring on those cod!!!
